SFL locks in $750m with Hapag-Lloyd extensions

Hapag-Lloyd

John Fredriksen-backed SFL Corporation has added another $750m to its contracted revenue after agreeing seven-year charter extensions with Hapag-Lloyd on six 15,400 teu containerships.

The renewed fixtures will keep the six ships with the German liner through 2035-36 at fixed rates and lift SFL’s charter backlog to around $4.6bn.

The New York-listed owner said it has added more than $1bn to its backlog so far this year.

The ships are the 2013-built Savannah Express and the 2014-built Baltimore ExpressVancouver Express, Oakland Express, Houston Express and Atlanta Express.

Their existing firm periods had been due to expire between the fourth quarter of 2028 and the fourth quarter of 2029.

The latest extensions build on a run of long-term liner deals for SFL. Last year, the company secured five-year extensions with Maersk on three 9,500 teu ships, adding about $225m of contracted revenue and keeping the vessels fixed through 2031.
